Dr. David Samadi – Today Show – Prostate Cancer Screening


Dr. Samadi of Mt Sinai Medical Center talks about how prostate cancer is being found in younger men. It is a silent killer and usually exhibits no symptoms. It’s usually found by a PSA and a physical exam. Early detection and treatment saves lives and families and restores a quality of life. Risk factors include genetics and family history. African-American are at a 3:1 higher risk than other races. Screening should begin at 40. Doctors need to look at PSA speed, rise and velocity. Ten percent of his patients are younger than the traditional patient. Every patient is different and doctors must figure out which cancer is aggressive and which is low-risk. Prostate cancer however has a high cure rate. Patients can take steps to lower risk, such as exercise, good nutrition and yearly screenings.
